British singer-songwriter beabadoobee revealed the surprising and "very Gen Z" backstory to her name during an intimate show in virtual reality.

During her iHeartRadio LIVE show, which was held live in VR only in Meta Horizon Worlds on Monday (September 30) night, beabadoobee, whose real name is Beatrice Laus, shared how she came up with her stage name.

She didn't think music would be more than just a hobby for her, always thinking she would be a teacher instead, so she didn't have a stage name carefully crafted. When it came time to decide on the moniker she would use professionally when she did start releasing songs, she chose the unique name that she used for her private Instagram account — also called a "finsta" — and thus beabadoobee was officially created, a moved that she said was "very Gen Z of me."

The 24-year-old musician also shared how "Beaches," from her latest album This is How Tomorrow Moves, is her "favorite song" and that the song "Take A Bite," also from the album, was inspired by an Elliott Smith song as well as a "funky" rhythm from an Ashlee Simpson track.

Throughout beabadoobee's extensive set, she performed fan favorites like "Talk," "Coffee" and "She Plays Bass" as well as several songs from her new album, including "California," "Post," "Ever Seen," "Girl Song" and "One Time." Fans also went wild for tracks from her previous albums and EPs, like "Charlie Brown" from her 2020 debut studio album Fake It Flowers, "Sunny Day" from her 2022 sophomore work Beatopia, and "Cologne" from her 2021 EP Our Extended Play.

Speaking to the crowd, she explained how live music hits different than simply making music, even though she "first and foremost" loves writing songs.

"You feel the music more when you play it live with your band," she said, adding to the audience, "Every time i see you guys i just get so happy."

Beabadoobee dropped her third studio album This is How Tomorrow Moves in August, a 14-track project that includes her latest single "Beaches." In a statement about her new music, she explained that it was her "most personal one yet" and that she "[opened] up my heart to you in this one."

"'Beaches' was the only song in the record I wrote in [recording studio] Shangri La, the rest I wrote on my couch at home with my guitar," she added. "I hope in some way you can relate to my vulnerability in this record, in a way writing this was necessary in order to understand the way tomorrow moves and I guess I'm still figuring that out but that's okay."
